Top 5 Franchising Myths Busted by Sticky Fingers Cooking

Maybe what you think you know about franchising isn’t true—especially when it comes to an education franchise business with Sticky Fingers Cooking®!

Franchise businesses seem to be available for every type of service and product these days—coffee, tacos, electrical repair, pet care, after-school enrichment, and much more. However, just because it’s common doesn’t mean that everyone understands how franchising works and if it might work for them.

We are going to highlight some common misunderstandings about franchising and show how our model just might change your mind about buying a franchise.

Three colorful pieces of chalk lie on a black chalkboard with the words, “Back to School” written on it.
Ready to start a business? We explain the truth about franchising.

Myth #1: You need to be rich to make any dough.

Busted: Yes, there is an initial investment to start a franchise business, as there is with any business. What you’re usually paying for up front with a franchise is the established brand name. The franchisor has likely invested in their business for years to figure out systems and build up a reputation so you’re paying for the work done ahead of you.  At Sticky Fingers Cooking, the initial franchise fee is $48,000, and we can connect with you on funding through our partners at Benetrends.

Myth #2: In addition to the franchisee fee, you will have to fork over money to lease and build out a physical space.

Busted: Sticky Fingers Cooking was founded by a busy mom of three who wanted the flexibility of dropping her kids off at school and being home when they were home from school. As a result, this business was created with the flexibility of working from home with no physical space to rent. All cooking lessons take place at already established places where kids will be, such as school, recreation center, libraries, and more.

Myth #3: After you pay the initial franchise fee, it will take months or even a year before you open and start earning money in your business.

Busted: As a Sticky Fingers Cooking franchise business owner, you can open your new business in eight weeks! There is a process once you first reach out, and although our team responds quickly, it’s on you to show up for calls and meetings, then provide the necessary information in order to see if this will be a good fit. After you have signed and officially become a franchisee, your training is scheduled and then you can start counting the days to opening your business.

Myth #4: You have to already be an expert in the industry in order to succeed.

Busted: At Sticky Fingers Cooking, we do want to connect with people who want to work with kids and who are passionate about education, but we don’t expect our franchisees to be veteran CEOs, professional chefs, or certified teachers. Since 2011, we’ve built a fruitful business model rooted in community impact, teaching over 175,000 kids nationwide. While we provide a backend system, “The Dash,” that each franchisee learns how to use, and ongoing marketing and operational support, we understand you’re learning. Sometimes what a business owner learns on the job is that they need to hire someone to do a task they don’t like or haven’t mastered. Or, you can discover a hidden talent through navigating this new role as an employer and boss as you join us in “Cultivating Cool’inary Curiosity in Kids®” in your community.

Myth #5: Now that you’ve made the investment and opened your franchise business, the money will just roll in.

Busted: Any business is going to require a significant investment of your time and energy in order to succeed, even if the brand is well known. Sticky Fingers Cooking franchise owners have seen success from being owner-managed when they are involved in the day-to-day operations. Some owners enjoy also jumping in as chef instructors when their schedules allow!
